Flying home after liposuction: when & how
For most single-area liposuction, patients fly home around 5–7 days after surgery — after a check-up. Here's how to fly safely and comfortably.
Why timing matters
Surgery and long periods of sitting both raise the risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis). Cabin pressure can also increase swelling. Waiting until your surgeon has checked you, and moving regularly during the flight, reduces these risks.
Recommended timing
See the table in our trip-length guide. As a rule of thumb: face 3–5 days, one body area 5–7 days, fat transfer and full-body 7–10 days — always after your fit-to-fly check.
In-flight checklist
- Wear your compression garment plus compression socks
- Book an aisle seat so you can get up easily
- Walk every hour; do ankle circles while seated
- Drink plenty of water; skip alcohol
- Carry your medications and aftercare instructions in hand luggage
- After a BBL, bring a cushion and follow your surgeon's sitting advice
Warning signs
Calf pain or swelling in one leg, chest pain or shortness of breath during or after travel need urgent medical attention — tell cabin crew or go to an emergency department.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fly the day after liposuction?
Not recommended. Stay until your surgeon has examined you and confirmed you're fit to fly.
Should I take blood thinners for the flight?
Only if your doctor prescribes them. Discuss your risk factors at consultation.
Is business class necessary?
No, but an aisle seat and regular movement are important.
Can I fly with drains?
Your surgeon will tell you whether drains are used in your case and when they come out; follow that advice before booking your flight.
